The Chuckster Not Showing California Love
Our favorite basketball personality is Charles Barkley, who just loves poking and prodding until he gets someone irritated. But above all are his propensity for outrageous bets and stunts, culminating in taking down a 67 year old official in an All-Star weekend race. Well, after topping Dick Bavetta, Sir Charles has decided taking on one man isn’t enough for him. To our delight, he’s going for broke and striking out at the Bay Area.
You must, must, MUST visit NBA.com and, in the top right corner, click on the TNT overtime link. Between the halftime show — it’s only 7:24 — and the postgame (it’s longer but worth it), I tell ya, other than “The Office,†I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard at the TV. The great ones transcend the game, and Barkley has gone from simply thinking the Warriors would lose to full-on geographically based rooting including wearing a Dirk Nowitzki jersey.He insulted Sausalito! OK, it is on, Mr. Charles Barkley!
Warriors fans came to play last night with their Barkley signs, he said “What a bunch of jackasses,†and so it went until at the end of the game, on the arena video board, Thunder threw a pie in Chuck’s face. (As far as I can tell, the video board did NOT show Charles licking the cream off his face like a starving dog.)
Since we enjoy both the Warriors and Sir Charles, and this is pretty much all good fun–and good fun means higher ratings for these excellent games–this has been a pretty happy development for an otherwise lackluster playoffs outside of the Golden State. We just hope he makes another great bet about this before all is said and done. Like having to be the analyst at the rest of the TNT playoff games. Or sideline reporter. Or having to spend a summer in the Bay doing correspondence on the homeless and the hippies. That would be Fannn-tastic.
