Why Aren’t There More Black Bloggers? Equality For All!

Affirmative action is one of those things we prefer to stay out of, simply because it’s a dicey issue and taking stands is not our strong point. But when our main man Van Nguyen decides to lead the charge…well, we have to figure out exactly what the hell he’s talking about.

Van Nguyen, a Berkeley student of Vietnamese descent and member of a task force studying the impact of dropping affirmative action, also sees discrimination in the new system.

“I don’t think it’s a liberal-conservative issue,” he said. “It’s really, Do you believe in equality? Do you believe in access? Do you believe in everyone having an equal shot to get to Berkeley? If you believe that then we need to really rethink this (Proposition) 209 issue.”

Let us be frank. Discriminatory how? And to who? Affirmative action implies the need for a particular race to have this many students accepted into the university, and thus must meet certain quotas in order to succeed. So naturally if we include race into the process…well, your equality is gone. Seeing beyond a person’s ethnic descent is the first step to ending racial barriers. And besides, you make your own identity. Not some dapper four-year college.

On the other hand, UC Berkeley is slowly turning into a large, insecure Asian village. By 2025 we figure it won’t be much different from visiting Hong Kong. And black people make such cooler wingmen and groupies. We’re torn on that point.
