The Bears Are Migrating (Travel Blog Roundup)

We haven’t been the only Cal students traveling outside the country these past few weeks. Here are other adventurous students reporting their summer travels. (Thanks to Our Sturdy Golden Bear for helping to share the experiences of our fellow students!)

From Validation Station: “I did The Ledge bungy, about 45 meters. I got the DVD so everybody can watch it with me. And there’s even the extra bonus of watching me get my bungy injury! After the rope became useful, when I was turning right-side-up to enjoy the view, the rope grazed my right eyebrow and gave it a good rope burn which was bright red and led to many people asking me “What happened!” At least it had a good story. I felt like I was the stupidest person ever for getting an injury on a bungy jump, but then I met someone on the bus who had a similar mishap that split her lip and I felt redeemed via shadenfreude…”

From Cyrus Farivar: “Saturday was spent, as I mentioned, eating and drinking it up in Antwerp. I enjoyed a big cone of Belgian fries as a snack, then had a hearty bowl of mussels with a serious goblet of Westmalle Trippel. Mussels here are more expensive than at Café de Bruxelles, but the beer is way way cheaper. I love how you can get beer that’s five times better than what we can get in the US for about half to a third of the cost.

On Sunday, Giselle, George and I spent the afternoon in Rotterdam, where we caught the tail end of a street market. Although George and I just snacked on a bloedworst sandwich, we happened upon a salted herring stand. For the low low price of 1.75 euros, you can get a four-inch salted herring covered in diced onions. I can’t say that I recommend it two minutes after finishing a sausage (my stomach churned a bit), but I can see how for intrepid Dutch sailors, it’s probably quite tasty.

After that, we stopped in at a Surinamese place and had spicy chicken and roti, then stopped for beers at a canalside café, then walked around a bit, and later chowed down on raw seafood and more beers. (Fortunately, George shares my appetite!)”

From Blight Right, Big Shitty!: “I went to Akihabara tonight. There isn’t really much to do there. I did manage to FINALLY get a cell phone, though. Gosh, I sure am good at Japanese. Some dude stopped me and my friends in Shibuya the other night and tried to recruit us for some modeling thing, but I was the only person who could understand anything he was saying, AND I TOTALLY HANDLED THAT SHIT. And then today, I went out looking for phones, and yeah. The first girl I talked to kind of lost her patience with me, but she got another guy to take care of me AND I TOTALLY HANDLED THAT SHIT.”

From Dance, dance the night away: Things I discovered about LA which endeared me: …Things I discovered about LA that I grew to despise: I heard a girl say “You know, drunk driving is one of those things that probably isn’t a good thing, and you probably shouldn’t do it, but you know, sometimes you just have to!…It’s fucking ugly. Yeah, there are a few nice parts, but it’s like looking for diamonds in a swimming pool full of shit.”
