Downloading Simplicity Recap

Most students are starting to hit the grind, and the last thing they want to deal with is their laptops giving out on them and destroying their files (I live in mortal fear of this, everyday). Most of this has to do with using the crap you get with your XP or Vista system–although Vista itself should be tossed in landfills. In case you missed it, here’s a summary of all the neat-o applications you can take with you to simplify your PC lives. If you have a Mac, for once, you’re probably missing out.

Foxit Reader and PDF Creator, Sumatra for PCs: Replaces Adobe Acrobat and allows you to not dread the word PDF.
VLC Media Player: Replaces Windows Media Player, Real Player, Quicktime…everyone of those unhappy programs goes away. Unless you have to use webcasts.
Pidgin/Meebo: Replaces crappy instant messaging programs with something much cleaner. Allows you to be unproductive and use abbreviated words in style.
Bye bye Norton: Get rid of that “constantly reminding you to update it to the point of driving you insane” junk. Make your system healthy with Clamwin.
Audacity: Turns you into a music mixing master.
Sopcast: Watch almost all your Premier League/NFL teams in action on the weekends, plus whatever online channels are available from outside the country. No more need for crappy satellite TV packages.

Do readers have any further tips for replacing generic Windows garbage? Other than the obvious Ubuntu reference.
