Even McClellan Mounted Stronger Offensives

McClellan really wasn't good at helping black people eitherI should have seen this coming. Either way, I didn’t really care.

While we didn’t mention race in our piece, the loquacious Avinash felt the need to make ethnic cracks regarding the robbery suspects. In his Bears Necessity post, he wrote:

Man, black people sure haven’t forgotten how to run. Not sure why they went UPHILL though…

Um, wow. So one petty crime gets racialized? Usually we’d just ignore that, like so many other crazy/racist/sexist comments one can find on the net. But when a blogger is attempting to reflect the student life of our school, it’s important not to promote that kind of image, and send those kinds of messages. Just an opinion.

What a strange thing to say. In fact, I’m still not quite sure what it means. What I do know is that if you look at the UCPD crime report, there’s a lot of sobering stats. As far as I can see, most of these perpetrators happen to be (circumstantially, if you’d like to think that way) black. As far as I know, criminals flee from the scene of the crime. Historically, black people are known to do a lot of running in the literal/metaphorical sense, not only from cops, but from lynch mobs, segregationists, white supremacists, slave owners, in Olympic races, during danceoffs, imitating Carlton dances, etc. etc. Somehow this becomes misconstrued as a racist comment. Plenty of sense.

Of course, it’d be important to note that the Daily Cal has always been above using the word “black” or “race” in most of those articles, so it must be really difficult to tell who’s black, right? Or here? Maybe you could look here or here.

Oh wait, who’s picture is on the Daily Cal right now for last night’s arrest? I guess if you’re Stephen Colbert, it looks like a regular guy. Since Colbert is omnipotent, the Daily Cal gets the wag of the finger.

So anyway, as long as you barely make mention of the criminal’s race, it’s ok. But heaven forbid you use the connotation in a sentence.

Discuss the article. Is there something wrong with what I said? Or is the Daily Cal doing its typical overreacting? Bonus points for political incorrectness.

EDIT: The quote has been retracted. I’m not terribly interested in what the Clog thinks is decent and moral, but upon further review it wasn’t very funny or clever in the first place. And even if there was some relevance to what I was discussing, it got lost in this innocuous statement.

I knew editorializing news would only get me into trouble. Have to be careful on the tongue next time–blogging every day drains you. I need another break.

Apologies if you were “offended”, although I somehow doubt any of you were.

BallHype: hype it up!
