Sunday Morning QB, Cal Preview: “The bad news from that perspective is that both the most reliable and most explosive players have all gone on to the pros, and the immediate reserves are not as highly regarded — though Jordan wasn’t a high profile recruit, Hawkins was a four-star prospect out of junior college and Jackson was the hands-down, must-have receiving star of the class of 2005, whereas expected replacements Jeremy Ross, Michael Calvin and senior LaReyelle Cunningham generated far less hype (and, so far, even less on-field production). If the Bears are looking for a new field-stretching athlete, it’s likely to come from among a group of guys who haven’t taken a snap: Florida transfer/serial legal risk Nyan Boateng or true freshman Marvin Jones. Otherwise, the focus of the attack is likely to shift back to the much-anticipated running of Jahvid Best, or whoever’s next in Tedford’s tailback parade.”

What’s Bruin, Dawg: “At any rate, my overall point is that I can use any number of real-life examples to either show that Cal fans are amazingly nice or total morons. It’s a two-way street, folks.

Nice Cal Fans: 2005 Rose Bowl; A really inebriated UCLA fan (small Asian girl, must have been no older then 16 or 17) is stumbling up to her seat by us in Section 2. She proceeds to fall down on one knee, and I kid you not, just totally upchuck right there all over a very nice Cal husband and wife who must have been in their 50s. The husband laughs, the wife laughs, and they just kinda’ signal the usher, point, and go “That’s a football game for you.” They were easily the two nicest people I’ve ever met in a stadium in my entire life. They didn’t yell, didn’t scream, nothing. Just smiled and moved on.

Idiot Cal Fan: USC v. UCLA @ LA Colisuem, 2007; First, there’s a Cal fan at the UCLA/USC game. Which was odd enough. He was sitting one row behind us way in the corner (you know, near the peristyle section that USC doles out as a pittance to the visiting fans). Anyways, we’re sitting throughout the entire game, listening to the Cal fan talk about how awesome his team is (keep in mind, by this point, Cal was 6-5 and had lost to UCLA earlier in the year). Several people told him to shutup. I had struck up a conversation with the gentleman next to me about the coaching staff - we both were none too pleased, as in typical UCLA fashion, we had begun to waste our timeouts with about 11 minutes to go. In the first quarter. Christian Taylor’s parents and family are sitting about three or four seats to the left of us, and down one row. Following yet another timeout, there’s an audible groan, and the Cal fan stands up, and screams, ‘Fire the black coach!’”

WSU Football Blog: “So, if Tardy is healthy and Ivory eligible, our backfield will be poised for at least 1,200 yards + rushing combined. With Woodard and Freikenschiltheisen at TE we will be suitable up the middle. And then you have burners Gibson, Anderson, and the snake-in-the-grass pounder Willis as wideouts for Rogers to spread the ball to. Honestly Cougar Nation, the sky is the limit for this group. This really could be one of the better offenses that we’ve had in a while if Rogers can execute it. And, when you factor in that every team will be seeing us for the first time this year, and you have a recipe for a team that may really get on a roll. The key will be how quickly Rogers picks up the offense generally, and how well he does establishing the middle of the field with his passing game–which as Cougar fans know is ALWAYS the struggle with first year quarterbacks.”

Trojan Wire: “See Jennifer Mueller. See Jennifer Mueller run. She may only be 5-9, but Jennifer is all leg. A freshman sprinter from Jersey, Ms. Mueller has been whipping up quite an intense internet storm. Busted Coverage lists her as a team member of their 2008 Olympics Of Hot College Athletes. And National Lampoon Splog is abuzz with alleged facebook images of the Trojan temptress donning a sombrero and downing a beer-bong ala Matt Leinart (below).”

Ted Miller’s ESPN Pac-10 Blog: “YouTube is full of highlight-reel hits from [Rey] Maualuga. That’s why one Internet service named Maualuga this season’s “Scariest Defender.” That’s why a Maualuga neologism found its way into the online Urban Dictionary: Maualugaed. Defined as: “In football, it is used to describe when a player is absolutely destroyed by a hit. A reference to USC linebacker Rey Maualuga. Pronounced: mao-uh-loo-guhd.” And as used in a sentence: “Dude, did you just see the Michigan QB get completely maualugaed? I’m surprised he can still walk!”

SEC folks notoriously hate USC. But popular SEC blog “Every Day Should Be Saturday,” (which sometimes uses adult language) has celebrated Maualuga, even once having Trojans coach Pete Carroll shoot his linebacker out of a cannon at fighter planes piloted by Charlie Weis and Lou Holtz (it sort of makes sense if you read the script that accompanies LSUFreek’s graphic).”

EDSBS: “Pete Carroll is a fan of Pete Carroll. We saw it on Facebook. It must be true:

Carroll has also hit Facebook critical mass and has zero friend slots left, maxing out his 5000 person network. Social networking, your amazing capacities cannot hold the Humanitarian’s magnitude. It was a noble effort, though.”

Addicted to Quack on the one-and-done college basketball rule: “As an NBA fan, I love the one year wait rule.  Sure, the LeBrons and Garnetts were ready, but the vast majority aren’t (even Kobe didn’t start as a rookie).  If you’re not an NBA fan, I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to draft a player, have him take four years to develop, then move somewhere else as a free agent after the one season he finally becomes useful.  Not to mention the Korolene Youngs and Ndudi Ebis who never work out, period.  The one year policy is like insurance to an NBA team.

But as a college fan, I hate it.  Oregon hasn’t been burned by any of these players, but it isn’t really good for the game to have a Durant or Anthony become a big star, then be gone after one year.  If you look at the decline of the popularity of the college game, its because there is no continuity from year to year.”
