Power Overwhelming

Can companies be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? Because we’re fairly certain that Blizzard Entertainment may have just done more work for peace talks in the Korean Peninsula then Clinton and Bush have accomplished in a decade.

There were rumors, turmoil, arguments, and speculation for nearly ten years. We’ve waited and waited. But finally, the smoke has cleared, and Blizzard has announced StarCraft 2.

The announcement came during the WorldWide Invitational in Korea, as Blizzard had promised. An FMV sequence starring some zerg and a Marine led to the official announcement during the event last night, which sent a shockwave of approval in the form of yelps from the Korean audience. Following the official announcement, a bevy of artwork, screens, videos were shown. Likewise, StarCraft2.com launched.
Four protoss units were shown, three of which are new. Firstly, there’s the Dragoon replacement, a “Goliath-Dragoon” mix called “Immortal.” The Dark Templar now also have a mech unit called “The Stalker.” Finally, the “Phase Prism” moves units like the Arbiter, but it also acts like a mobile base as a Pylon. Despite the demonstration of gameplay with these units, Blizzard noted that everything was a work in progress and may not reflect the final game.

Based on the comments we received on the previous speculation posts and general ear-to-the-ground on the Internet, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is going to make many people very, very happy. Bless the children of Korea.

We’re kind of sad that it took so fricking long for these dudes to make a sequel, because any impetus that semi-social young adult nerds had for meeting women will be dashed in mad Zergling rushes and 3v3 BGH. This is when we’d nominally swoop in for the kill, but unfortunately we’ll probably be gone into the workplace killing ourselves in 9 to 5s.

Actually, who are we kidding. We’ll be playing this too. For Aiur!

(Edit: We have obtained gameplay video, you can view it after the jump.)

The trailer again looks great, and the Protoss look ridiculously unbeatable above first glance. But that’s what always seems to happen–just because they look like the better race doesn’t always mean anything, since it probably takes hours to build up to these perks. Nevertheless.
