Ask the Readers: Biggest Remaining Challenge for Cal

Posted by: Avinash on Monday, October 8th, 2007

USC’s loss has thrown everything out of whack. Which game will be the toughest for the Bears to win now?

Is it still USC? ASU, with their fast start to the season? UCLA (we always struggle in the Rose Bowl)? A trap game perhaps (OSU or Wazzu)? The letdown after the USC hype at Husky Stadium? Or could it possibly be the Big Game, with the now resurgent Cardinal?

In advance certainly the toughest game is still USC, not to say that it's THAT tough. As for the rest, the road games will be equally tough. ASU is super overrated, and Cal probably won't have trouble stepping up to destroy them. But the other road games will be tough; teams with nothing to lose will be extremely motivated. There's that chance that we'll drop one like we did in Arizona last year. So that will be tough.

USC was severely depleted on Saturday--even if that's no excuse for losing to Stanford, I'm sure they'll be back to full strength by the time for Cal.

I still think that UCLA is scarier than people are making them out to be. They had a third-string quarterback when they lost to Notre Dame. You're right, nothing's a sure thing this season.

Diego,

You're forgetting that UCLA lost to Utah as well. It's not that UCLA is a terrible team, it's that they don't compare at all to Cal. They were overrated because of their win against USC last year. All the predictions about their greatness proved to be untrue.

I still think USC can be a strong contender. Booty was playing with a jacked up thumb the rest of the Stanford game (all those interceptions). I wonder how the backup QB Sanchez will do... and if he performs well, presuming he starts for USC against Arizona, they might stick with him.

It has nothing to do with how talented you are, it's how well you play on Saturday. UCLA has pulled some strange shit against us in the Rose Bowl. Every year. I would not be surprised at something similar this year.

It'd be great if that's sexual assaulter Sanchez took that starting job for Cal. So many great chants we could start in the Student Section.

I'm much more worried about the ASU game at this point than the UCLA game. That said, U$C's still the toughest challenge left.
